Our Children Deserve the Best!
Sugarland Run School Board
Northern Virginia Leagues of Women Voters 2007 Questionnaire*

Q: What is the most critical issue facing our public schools today and how would you
apply them in this County?
A: The shortage of students trained in math and science to support our technological competitiveness
is an important national challenge. Our Academy of Science at Dominion High, support for AP
participation and planned expansion of technology training enhance our graduates’ competitiveness for
college.  I believe that knowing how to write and think are equally important.  Balance and enrichment
are key.  I have supported and will continue to support expanded enrichment opportunities in our
schools.

Q: What will be your budget priorities in meeting the ever increasing needs of our
schools?
A: Supporting enhanced teaching quality and the teaching process are priorities. Our teacher
compensation package and our support for advanced training and certification set Loudoun County
Public Schools apart from neighboring school systems. Supporting increased compensation for National
Board Certification will receive my continued emphasis.

Q: What will you do to lessen the disruption of school boundary changes?
A: Boundaries must be adjusted as our student population continues to grow.  We have approved
policies to expand legacy and grandfathering options for students.  While chair of the Policy
Committee, I also led discussions on what guarantees we could provide to parents and residents.
Setting the proper expectations for boundaries and future adjustments can be as important as the
measures themselves.

Q: What other issues would you like to discuss?
A: I have placed high priority on enhancing educational quality and expanding our educational options
while aggressively managing the growth of our budget, which accounts for over two-thirds of the
property taxes paid by county residents.  Class sizes in our schools remain low, outcomes on every
level have improved and recognition of our system’s excellence has grown, all while holding steady the
school’s share of our county budget.  Teacher compensation is highly competitive and turnover is
phenomenally low.

The excellent public education that Loudoun provides is an asset to the entire county.  It is an asset I
oversee with the greatest care for our children’s future and the taxpayers who fund it.

Loudoun Education Association Questionnaire

Of all honorable endeavors, none calls to it more dedicated and giving professionals than our K12
teachers. Our system of public education relies on these dedicated teaching professionals. Indeed,
the future of our country rests squarely on the education of our youth – and the care we give to the
teaching professionals who will educate them.
